E-Scooter Insurance

Can I legally ride a privately owned e-scooter on UK roads?

Not yet, but privately owned e-scooters are expected to become road legal soon. Here’s what you may need to ride one legally:

  1. Do I need a CBT?
It is highly likely that a Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) certificate will be required to ride a road-legal e-scooter. The CBT ensures that riders understand basic road safety and handling before using public roads.

  2. Is a helmet required?
As above it is highly likely that wearing a helmet will be a legal requirement. Gloves and other protective gear are not mandatory, but they are strongly recommended for rider safety.

  3. Does the e-scooter need to be speed restricted?
The legal requirements limiting speed of e-Scooters applies only to rental trial scheme, any private e-scooter would need to meet the necessary approval standards for road use and would likely not be subject to speed restriction.

  4. Can I carry passengers?
No, e-scooters are designed for single-person use only. In addition the carrying passengers will not be allowed under the terms of any insurance that can be put in place.

  5. What else will I need to ride legally?

    • Insurance, a valid e-scooter insurance policy will be required.

    • A driving licence, with the correct entitlement for riding an e-scooter.

    • Approval, the e-scooter must meet government safety and construction standards to be road legal.

How It Will Work

At eavi, we’re proud to support the journey to make e-scooters road legal in the UK. By working with innovative e-scooter manufacturers, a series of vehicle upgrades are implemented to meet the Motorcycle Single Vehicle Approval (MSVA) agency’s strict requirements.

Each e-scooter undergoes thorough inspection and approval, gaining Le-1 class low-powered moped status. Once approved, these e-scooters can legally be ridden on UK roads with the appropriate insurance, licence, and safety equipment, such as a helmet and gloves.

Take the next step towards cost-effective and eco-friendly transport with eavi’s support.

We Know It’s Possible

We want to offer the necessary policy to make these e-scooters road legal.

We know it can be done as we’ve done it before! Unfortunately, there was turbulence in the wider UK motor insurance market.

However, eavi is currently in discussions with alternative UK motor insurers.

Keep your battery’s charged!
